This curious structure is a transformed hay derrick, which was the old way of making haystacks. Mobile, derricks were moved all across the Valley, from the late1800s into the 1960s, all for the process of haymaking. Short of the boom and cable wires, this derrick was still workable—that is, until the Fall of 1999 when the Lattins' remodeled it into a Pumpkin Tower. During the Fall Festival at Lattin Farms in October, this hay derrick holds more than a hundred creatively-carved pumpkins which light up the autumn skies at night.
During the Christmas, a star sparkles at the top—wishing Season’s Greetings to the Lahontan Valley.
